I was on Straightfromthea.com and saw this story about my boy Sharkir Stewart and new I had to post it…
The 2009 Georgia Music Hall of Fame Awards went off without a hitch this year…well, that is until the family of the late Shakir Stewart approached the stage to accept his award. Stewart, who’s death rocked the foundation of the recording industry when he took his life in November 2008 at the age of 34, was being honored posthumously with a hall of fame induction. While this would seem to be a joyful event, the presentation of his award ended up being the most talked about situation of the evening:
According to the AJC:
Along with Stewart’s parents, his fiance Michelle Rivers graciously accepted the award with the late music mogul’s two adorable children Micaela and Sebastian. Micaela thanked the crowd, beautifully reading emotional remarks about her daddy.
But just as the lights went down on the family, following the award presentation, the entire audience (and most likely countless viewers tuned into Public Television stations across the South) heard a female voice in the group yell: “GET THE [EXPLETIVE] OFF ME! DON’T TOUCH ME!”
At the time of the blow-up, microphones were still on and the argument could be heard throughout the venue. The family was escorted to the back kitchen area where the argument continued. No word on why the family member snapped other than speculation about the dissension between his children’s mother and his family over his estate.
During Shakir impressive career, Stewart signed Beyonce Knowles, discovered and developed Young Jeezy, Sean Garrett, and published several #1 hits, including Outkast’s “The Way You Move,” Destiny Child’s “Survivor,” and Beyonce featuring Jay Z’s “Crazy in Love.” Tragically, Shakir died in 2008 at the age of 34, shocking and saddening the music industry and leaving a legacy of influence in his wake.
